Nicolas Cage said on Saturday, 10 October 2026, at New York Comic Con, that he did not sign a waiver allowing AI use on Prime Video’s “Spider-Noir,” and that he probably will not work with Amazon’s studio again. Variety, in a story by Antonio Ferme published at 9:54am PT, places the remarks on a panel on the Empire Stage. Its lede says Amazon, which developed the series, “allegedly asked him to sign an AI waiver.” The quote Variety prints is:

“Amazon is a very AI-friendly company, to the tune of $50 billion invested in OpenAI,” Cage said. “I am not an AI-friendly actor, so it’s like, connect those dots! I’m not a member of their club. I didn’t sign the waiver to let him use AI on ‘Spider Noir.’ I’m probably not going to be working with that studio again, but that’s okay.”

The quoted lines say he did not sign. They do not themselves include a sentence in which he says Amazon asked.

Where the wording differs

Deadline, by Greg Evans at 12:46pm the same day, quotes “50 billion dollars invested in OpenAI,” “let them use AI on Spider-Noir,” “I’m not a member of their club,” and “I’m probably not going to be working with that studio again, but that’s okay.” It also prints a lead-in, “How do you survive AI?”

The Hollywood Reporter, by Abbey White at 10:04am, calls the session a Spotlight panel and quotes: “How do you survive AI? Amazon is a very AI friendly company to the tune of 50 billion dollars invested to OpenAI. I am not an AI friendly actor. I didn’t sign the waiver to let them use AI on Spider-Noir. It’s kind of like I’m probably not going to be working with that studio again. But that’s OK.”

IGN, by Michael Cripe, who writes that IGN attended the panel, updated the story at 10:36pm. Its quote reads: “Amazon is a very AI-friendly company, to the tune of $50 billion invested in OpenAI. I’m not an AI-friendly actor,” then “I’m not part of their club. I didn’t sign the waiver to use AI on Spider-Noir. I’ll probably not work with that studio again, but that’s OK.”

His $50 billion line, and Amazon’s filing

The $50 billion figure is what Cage said. On 27 February 2026 Amazon said it “will invest $50 billion in OpenAI, starting with an initial $15 billion investment and followed by another $35 billion in the coming months when certain conditions are met.”

Amazon’s quarterly report for the period ended 30 June 2026 says the company invested $15.0 billion in OpenAI Series C preferred stock in the first quarter and agreed to buy a further $35.0 billion of that stock. It says $13.7 billion of that further amount was invested in the second quarter, so $28.7 billion was recorded as of 30 June, and that after 30 June the company invested the remaining $21.3 billion. Those amounts, as the filing states them, add to $50 billion. The February release described conditions on the later money. The quarterly report describes that money as invested.

The cancellation is a different story

Variety reported on 4 September 2026, in a story by Michael Schneider, that Prime Video canceled “Spider-Noir” after one season of eight episodes and that it would not return for a second season. The 10 October stories mention that cancellation. They do not say the waiver remarks explain it.

Variety, Deadline, The Hollywood Reporter, and IGN do not include a comment from Amazon on the waiver.
