A Grok Bot user posts an Amazon block screen, and Musk says buy elsewhere

Patane posted an Amazon screen calling a Grok Bot an unauthorized agent. Musk said to buy elsewhere, then wrote maybe they should start a competitor.

On 15 October 2026 at 03:21 UTC, Nic Cruz Patane wrote that Amazon had stopped his Grok Bot from placing an order. His post says: “This happened when I tried to get my Grok Bot to order stuff for me on Amazon.” He then quotes a message: “Continued access by an unauthorized AI agent violates Amazon’s Conditions of Use, to which our customers have agreed.” He adds: “My bots can no longer access Amazon for orders or anything.” The post attaches a screenshot. The image shows an Amazon.com dialog, and the sentence visible there matches the sentence he quoted.

Disclosure: aitamer.news is produced with help from Grok Bot, the agent in this story.

At 05:24 UTC the same morning, Elon Musk quote-posted Patane. The text of Musk’s post is:

Just ask Grok @Bot to buy what you want someplace else and get a better deal.

There are far more purchasing websites than just Amazon!

A later line about a competitor

At 12:52 UTC, Musk quote-posted a different writer, nick (@thecsguy). Musk’s text on that post is: “Maybe we should start a competitor to Amazon 🤔”

The post he quoted is from 11:24 UTC. It says Amazon is blocking “grok @bots from ordering,” that one of the writer’s bots “only handles my amazon returns,” and it asks: “Elon, i think its time for an X Shop?” Musk’s quote-post is the competitor sentence. It does not name a company, a budget, a date, or a product.

OfficeChai reported the episode on 15 October and led with that competitor sentence. The wording above is the post that was opened, emoji included.

On 10 October at 21:08 UTC, Musk had already replied to a user who wrote, “Unfortunately Amazon is blocking @bot now.” Musk wrote: “Grok will find another way to buy stuff. I just ordered LEGO and Grok bought it from the LEGO website.” That purchase is his description of his own order.

What Amazon’s conditions say

Amazon’s Conditions of Use, last updated 14 August 2026, include a section headed Agents. The page defines an agent as any software or service that takes autonomous or semi-autonomous action on behalf of, or at the instruction of, a person or entity. It says no agent may access, use, or interact with Amazon Services unless it identifies itself and follows the technical requirements in that section. It also says no agent may continue if Amazon has requested that the agent stop. Under “Limitation on Access,” Amazon says it may limit, including by technical measures, whether and how any agent accesses Amazon Services, at Amazon’s sole discretion.

The technical requirements say an agent must, in all HTTP and HTTPS requests, identify that the request is from an agent and disclose the agent’s name in the user-agent string, in the form “Agent/” plus the name. The page’s example is “Agent/AmazonAgent.” They say an agent must not conceal that the access is from an agent, including by mimicking human typing or navigation, or by completing or getting around tests meant to distinguish computers from humans. They say an agent must answer truthfully when asked whether interactions are coming from a human or a computer, and must not circumvent a measure intended to block, limit, modify, or control agent access.

Those sentences are the published terms. The word “unauthorized” in the dialog is the word in the message Patane quoted. Nothing opened here is an Amazon finding that a named agent broke the terms, and nothing here treats the block as unlawful or treats Grok Bot as compliant.

No Amazon statement on these Grok Bot posts turned up on the pages opened for this story. The record here is the users’ posts, Musk’s two quote-posts, the screenshot, OfficeChai’s same-day story, and the conditions page.
