OpenAI’s deprecations page lists a shutdown on 23 October 2026 for a batch of older models it announced on 22 April. After that date calls to them stop working. This is a different wave from the 28 September removal of the legacy completion models.
What goes, and what OpenAI suggests instead
| Model (and aliases) | Suggested replacement |
|---|---|
gpt-image-1 |
gpt-image-2.5-sunburst or gpt-image-2.5-flare |
o1-2024-12-17 (o1), o1-pro-2025-03-19 (o1-pro) |
gpt-5.6-sol (pro reasoning mode for o1-pro) |
o3-mini-2025-01-31 (o3-mini) |
gpt-5.6-sol |
o4-mini-2025-04-16 (o4-mini), ft-o4-mini-2025-04-16 |
gpt-5.6-terra |
gpt-4-turbo, gpt-4-1106-preview, gpt-4-0613 (gpt-4) |
gpt-5.6-sol |
gpt-4o-2024-05-13 |
gpt-5.6-sol |
gpt-4.1-nano |
gpt-5.6-luna |
gpt-3.5-turbo-0125 (gpt-3.5-turbo) |
gpt-5.6-terra |
Fine-tuned models built on gpt-3.5-turbo, gpt-4, gpt-4.1-nano, babbage-002 and davinci-002 are removed on the same date.
Two things are easy to miss. First, the plain aliases go too: code that calls gpt-4, gpt-3.5-turbo, o1 or o3-mini without a date is affected. Second, only the May 2024 snapshot of GPT-4o is in this batch; the later gpt-4o and GPT-4.1 snapshots shut down on 14 January 2027, and the other GPT Image models (gpt-image-1-mini, gpt-image-1.5) on 1 December 2026, per the same page.
How to check
Search your code and config for the model names above, including environment variables and prompt or eval configs. OpenAI’s page notes that the List models endpoint returns an optional shutdown_date field for each model, so a quick script against GET /v1/models can flag anything with a date. The replacements are newer models with different behaviour and prices, so run your own tests rather than swapping strings blind.
