Rabi Shanker Guha posted on 15 October 2026 at 14:21 UTC that OpenUI 1.0 was being released. The post, read through fxtwitter, says the release is “bringing it to every other agent.” Guha’s profile on that post describes him as building OpenUI and as CEO of Thesys. The 1.0 packages were already on npm three days earlier.

GitHub release notes for @openuidev/[email protected] and @openuidev/[email protected] are titled “OpenUI Lang 1.0” and were published on 12 October 2026, at 15:06 UTC. npm records @openuidev/[email protected] at 2026-10-12T15:05:04.128Z and @openuidev/[email protected] at 2026-10-12T15:08:15.772Z. A 1.0.1 patch, “Update the README for OpenUI Lang 1.0,” is on GitHub at 04:23:58 UTC for lang-core and 04:24:16 UTC for react-lang, both on 15 October. npm shows lang-core 1.0.1 at 2026-10-15T04:23:33.910Z and react-lang 1.0.1 at 2026-10-15T04:25:47.119Z. Guha’s “today” matches the patch and the post, not the 12 October npm publish.

What the repository says it is

thesysdev/openui calls itself “The Open Standard for Generative UI.” The README on main, read 16 October, says a component library becomes a system prompt, the model streams OpenUI Lang, and a renderer paints UI as tokens arrive. It lists first-party runtimes for React, Vue, Svelte, and Angular, and says React also ships component libraries and chat interfaces.

The same README says OpenUI Lang “uses up to 67% fewer tokens than JSON.” That figure is the project’s. No benchmark file was opened for it.

The LICENSE file on main is the MIT License, copyright “2011-2024 Thesys Inc.” The GitHub API reports the same SPDX id, MIT. npm lists MIT on @openuidev/react-lang and @openuidev/lang-core.

1.0 is the React language packages

The 1.0.0 notes are explicit about the split. Upgrade @openuidev/lang-core and @openuidev/react-lang together, and together with the server that generates the system prompt. A 1.0 prompt teaches bare action steps such as @ToAssistant("Hi") without Action([...]), which a 0.x client does not run. react-ui 0.18 requires react-lang 1.0. @openuidev/server 0.3 uses lang-core 1.0 for autofix. The notes say to stay on server 0.2 with a 0.x client.

Vue, Svelte, and Angular do not move with this release. The notes say vue-lang, svelte-lang, and angular-lang stay on 0.4, which is OpenUI Lang 0.x, and that prompts for those packages should keep @openuidev/lang-core at ^0.4. On 16 October the GitHub releases for those three were still 0.4.2, and @openuidev/cli was 0.6.0. The README’s list of four runtimes and the 1.0.0 notes can both be true: the packages exist, and only the React language stack is at 1.0.

Two streaming changes are in the same notes. A program whose root statement is written last shows nothing until that line arrives, so the notes say to write root first. A cut-off output that never reached root, or any statement that calls the root component, now renders blank instead of a partial tree.

The quick start in the README is npx @openuidev/cli@latest create --name genui-chat-app.

Names that are not this project

The GitHub API, read at 17:42 UTC on 16 October, listed 11,302 stars on thesysdev/openui. Guha’s post says “10K+ GitHub stars” and “6M+ downloads” for the open-source release. The star count matches the “10K+” wording. A download total of 6 million was not checked against npm. The same post says the project was open-sourced six months ago. The repository created_at on the API is 2024-12-02T10:40:06Z, which is not six months before 15 October 2026. This account does not resolve that gap.

Three other “OpenUI” names showed up in the same search and are different code. wandb/openui is Weights & Biases’ project for describing a UI and seeing it rendered. open-ui.org is the Open UI W3C Community Group, for styling built-in controls such as select and checkboxes. The npm package named openui at version 1.0.4 is a 2017 React kit from a different repository. None of those is @openuidev/react-lang.

What to pin

If the app is React and the prompt is generated by a 1.0 server, pin @openuidev/lang-core and @openuidev/react-lang on the 1.0 line together. npm latest for both was 1.0.1 on this read. If the renderer is Vue, Svelte, or Angular, the 1.0.0 notes say to keep lang-core on 0.4. The license to read is the MIT file in thesysdev/openui, not a grant from the W3C group or from the wandb repository.
