Shopify News (2026-10-01) introduces Canvas: a new design surface where merchants build with Sidekick, Shopify’s AI agent—framed as a whole-store visual workspace that is rolling out to merchants over the coming days (Shopify News).
This is a theme / online-store design harness—not Shopify’s Checkout WebMCP agent-checkout tools, and not Honeycomb’s similarly named Canvas product.
Whole-store workspace, real theme code
Shopify describes Canvas as a place to see every page laid out together, pan across the store, and zoom into details. Merchants can chat with Sidekick and/or click elements; changes land in Canvas in real time (Shopify News).
The company stresses merchants are not editing a static preview, but a render of the real code behind the store—previewing interactivity and animation, and key pages with different products, collections, and screen sizes (Shopify News).
Sidekick on theme files
On the agent side, Shopify says Sidekick works directly on the theme’s files, with a simplified theme architecture. Sidekick validates code and reviews screenshots in a refine loop before handing the result back to the merchant (Shopify News).
Early rollout — not the editor replacement
Availability language is rollout-only: Canvas is rolling out over the coming days. Shopify has not claimed universal GA, all-plans availability, or mobile parity in this announce—and this brief invents none (Shopify News).
Ben Sehl, quoted in the same post: “We’re early here and Canvas is not replacing the existing editor yet. Things will change quickly, and there are gaps we still need to close.” Treat that as Shopify’s own maturity framing (Shopify News).
Vendor color (Shopify-attributed)
Shopify says Sidekick has been making more than twenty-five million edits to themes in the first half of 2026—a Shopify-attributed history metric, not an independent audit (Shopify News).
Sehl also compares a past multi-week Kotn build to building a fully custom store in “twenty minutes” with Canvas—an aspirational product quote, not a measured SLA (Shopify News).
Initial limits (TechCrunch)
TechCrunch’s Oct 1 coverage (Sarah Perez) reports Canvas is desktop-only at launch, and that third-party theme support, app blocks and extensions, markets, translations, rollouts, and theme updates are not part of the initial launch—with Shopify telling TechCrunch it plans to support those over time (TechCrunch).
Who should care
Merchants and theme teams watching Sidekick move from chat edits into a whole-store design surface should start at Shopify’s Introducing Canvas post. Lead with the real theme-code render and theme-file edit loop; keep rolling out over the coming days and not replacing the existing editor yet explicit; treat desktop-only and the TechCrunch gap list as launch limits, not a finished editor replacement.
