Indian model maker Sarvam has signed a memorandum of understanding with Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff (HQ IDS) at India’s Ministry of Defence. It sets up an umbrella framework for AI projects across the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force, and the joint and tri-service organisations under HQ IDS.
Under the MoU, Sarvam says it will “design, develop and deploy AI applications for the operational, training and decision-support requirements of the three Services”, and provide technical support afterwards. The work spans several projects, with HQ IDS coordinating.
What is in scope
Sarvam’s own description of the focus areas: “decision support, target acquisition and data fusion across the sensor-to-shooter loop, with human oversight retained on operational decisions.” The AI layer is to be built in India and deployed on sovereign infrastructure, and the three Services would share the same foundation models, agent infrastructure and geospatial and perception systems, so lessons from one Service’s project can inform the next.
The work will be done by Chanakya, which Sarvam calls its “firewalled division focused on national security and defence”, using its own models, including Sarvam 105B.
What is not
Neither Sarvam nor BusinessLine’s report gives a contract value, a list of projects or a timeline. An MoU sets the terms for future work; it is not itself an order. “Target acquisition” is the phrase to watch: it puts a commercial language-model company directly into weapons-adjacent work, with the human-oversight condition as the stated safeguard.
