Gemini Skills replace Gems — slash-invoke instructions, dated rollouts

Google Skills replace Gems (Sep 30 primaries): slash-invoke, stackable, SKILL.md-shaped. Do not collapse dates—consumer blog “globally/today” vs Workspace Updates (Workspace Oct 5; Gemini app Oct 13). App↔Workspace skills do not sync. Gems sunset “no sooner than” Mar 1 / Jun 1 2027 for Workspace cohorts.

Google is consolidating tailored instructions onto Skills and winding down Gems—announced across two 2026-09-30 primaries: the consumer Gemini blog and Workspace Updates.

This is a Desk Bot tools/gemini briefing. Hard lock: do not collapse consumer “today / globally” language and the Workspace Updates calendar into one ship day.

What Skills are

Skills are reusable custom instructions you save once and run from the prompt bar with / + the skill name. They can be stacked in one prompt; the consumer blog’s “starting today” framing also covers reference files (plain text, PDFs, images). Unlike Gems, skills run inline in unified chat threads. Workspace Updates adds that skills are built on the open Markdown-native SKILL.md standard (copy skills from other platforms) (consumer, Updates).

Both primaries state skills will replace Gems as the tailored-instruction tool.

Hard date split (attribute each primary)

Surface / claim Source language Do
Consumer Gemini chat Blog: rolling skills into Gemini chat “globally” / “starting today” (Sep 30); Workspace business/enterprise/nonprofit/education “in the coming weeks”; already in Gemini Spark Attribute consumer blog only
Skills in Workspace Updates: begin October 5, 2026 (Rapid complete by Oct 12; Scheduled start Oct 19 → mid-November) Prefer Workspace Updates for admin/rollout copy
Skills in Gemini app Updates: begin October 13, 2026 → expected complete mid-November Prefer Workspace Updates

Soft locks that stay soft

  • No sync: Skills created in the Gemini app and in Workspace do not sync—recreate if you need both (Updates).
  • Gems transition (no invented single kill day):
    • Nov 17, 2026: Gems move to the Settings panel in the Gemini app; still creatable/usable (Updates).
    • Personal: consumer blog — remove support for Gems starting in November; Opal experiment turns down then (Labs Gems also turn down and do not migrate to skills)—month-only framing, coarser than a day stamp.
    • Business / enterprise / nonprofit: prefer Updates “no sooner than March 1, 2027” (consumer blog: March 2027).
    • Education: prefer Updates “no sooner than June 1, 2027” (consumer blog: June 2027; includes Classroom / Gemini LTI).
    • Admins get ≥30 days’ notice before auto-migration details (Updates).

Migration path (primaries only)

Consumer blog: existing Gems data migrate automatically “when Gems go away”; help center for manual transition. Workspace Updates: optional manual recreate as skills now; remaining Gemini-app Gems auto-migrate to draft skills at cutover; Workspace Studio Ask a Gem cannot be added to new flows (existing keep working until cutover) (consumer, Updates).

Who gets Skills

Workspace Updates: Gemini-app skills for all Workspace customers + personal Google accounts (U18 on Gemini app coming per consumer footnote; Workspace skills 18+ only). Workspace skills for listed Business/Enterprise/AI Pro Education / AI Expanded Access SKUs. Consumer footnote: available across Google AI subscription tiers; currently 18+ with U18 coming soon—attribute, don’t invent eligibility beyond the primaries.

Who should care

Admins and builders swapping Gems for slash-invoke Skills should start at Workspace Updates for the Oct 5 / Oct 13 calendars and the consumer blog for the product lede—keep the date split, plan for no app↔Workspace sync, and treat Mar 1 / Jun 1 2027 as “no sooner than,” not a single global sunset day.
