OpenAI will put ChatGPT and Codex on one shared usage allowance. Its help center article, updated on 31 October, says: “Starting in December, Plus, Pro, and Business plans’ usage allowance will be shared across ChatGPT and Codex as we bring the agentic capabilities of Work into the main ChatGPT experience.”
What changes
- One pool. Use of ChatGPT and Codex will count against the same allowance on Plus, Pro and Business plans.
- Measured in tokens. OpenAI says how much you use “will depend on the model you choose and the task you ask it to do”, and that more advanced models and complex tasks generally use more.
- Instant chat is free of it. “Instant chat will not draw from your usage.”
- One place to check. Combined remaining usage and reset times will show in Settings, then Usage.
- At the limit you can wait for the reset, upgrade, or buy credits for eligible features.
OpenAI says it expects “most users won’t need to wait for their usage to reset more often than they do now”. That is the company’s expectation, not a measured result.
What is not published
The article gives no start day in December, no allowance per plan and no token rate per model. So nobody outside OpenAI can yet say how many Codex tasks a chat-heavy day will cost, or the reverse.
This lands a day after OpenAI cancelled its Pro 200 cut and doubled Work and Codex allowances on Pro 100 and Pro 500. It also matters if you use partner apps that bill to your ChatGPT plan, since those requests count against your plan too.
Why this matters
If you lean on Codex for long agent runs, from December a heavy day of advanced-model chat can eat into the same allowance, and vice versa. Before the switch, note how often you hit limits today, then compare once Settings, Usage shows the combined number. Teams on Business should agree on who uses advanced models for chat, because the budget is now shared with coding work.
