AI image models, episode 4. Previously: FLUX, Nano Banana vs GPT Image and xAI Grok Imagine. Next: Recraft vs Krea.
Midjourney and Ideogram are two of the oldest names in image generation, and they have drifted far apart. Midjourney is a subscription app built around taste and personalization, with no developer access. Ideogram has become a builder’s company: a priced API, an editing model it markets on precision, and open weights you can run yourself. We compare the current versions: Midjourney V8.2 (default since 24 July 2026) and Ideogram 4.5 (launched 30 September), with Ideogram 4.0 where its open weights matter.
1. Max resolution
- Midjourney: V8.1 and V8.2 render natively at 2K in HD mode, 2048 by 2048 at 1:1. Standard mode is 1024 by 1024. HD costs more GPU time.
- Ideogram 4.5: native 2K, and the model page says it can edit high-resolution images without downsizing, showing a 24.2 megapixel source.
2. Aspect ratios
- Midjourney: up to 14:1 in standard mode and up to 4:1 in HD, per its aspect ratio docs.
- Ideogram 4.5: up to 6:1 in the API, with output sizes up to 2048 by 2048 in total area.
3. Reference types
- Midjourney: the new Edit Model edits images from written instructions, builds new images from references (it replaces Omni Reference and Character Reference), and does inpainting and outpainting in the Editor. It works alongside image prompts, style references, moodboards and Personalization.
- Ideogram 4.5: two API endpoints. Generate takes a prompt plus optional references; Precise Edit changes part of an image and leaves the rest alone. Ideogram lists color and lighting, text changes, product shots, restoration, sketch to image, style reference, reframing and depth to image.
4. References at once
- Midjourney: up to 4 in the Edit Model.
- Ideogram 4.5: up to 5 on Generate.
5. Price (read 1 November)
- Midjourney: subscriptions only, no API. Basic is $10 a month with 3.3 hours of fast GPU time; Standard $30 with 15 hours plus unlimited relaxed images; Pro $60 with 30 hours and Stealth mode; Mega $120 with 60 hours. Annual billing saves 20%, and extra fast time is $4 an hour.
- Ideogram: the API is priced per image, with no subscription needed. Ideogram 4.5 costs $0.03 at low quality, $0.06 at medium and $0.10 at high for prompt-only images, or $0.22 at high with references or Precise Edit. A very low tier at $0.008 covers references and edits only. The fixed price does not change with prompt length, reference count or resolution. App plans are Plus at $20 a month ($15 billed yearly), Pro at $60 ($42 yearly) and Team at $30 a user ($20 yearly), plus pay-as-you-go credits at 1 cent each.
6. Speed and leaderboard rank (read 1 November)
- Midjourney: about 4 seconds for a standard V8.1 image and about 12 seconds for HD, per its V8.1 announcement. That is Midjourney’s own figure. Because it has no API, Midjourney does not appear on Artificial Analysis, so there is no independent rank to compare.
- Ideogram: no published speed figure. On Artificial Analysis text to image, Ideogram 4.0 (Quality) ranks 32nd with an Elo of 1026 and Ideogram 4.5 (High) 40th with 1015. The leader, GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst, scores 1222. On the editing board, Ideogram 4.5 (High) ranks 28th with 1070, against 1199 for the leader. Neither board tests Ideogram’s main claim, which is clean multi-turn editing.
7. Character consistency
- Midjourney: handled by the Edit Model with up to four references. Its own tip: if features get mixed up between characters, combine them into one reference image.
- Ideogram: references on Generate, and multi-turn editing that Ideogram says does not build up artifacts. Its model page compares favorably against GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst and Nano Banana over several edits. That is Ideogram’s own demo, not an independent test.
8. Style and scene consistency
- Midjourney: this is its home ground. Style references, moodboards and Personalization profiles carry a look across images, and V8.2 is described as understanding a user’s taste “much better”. Midjourney notes that moodboards and style references may need extra prompt direction with the new Edit Model.
- Ideogram: style references in 4.5. The open Ideogram 4 model adds structured JSON prompts with bounding-box layout and color palette controls.
9. Against the previous version
- Midjourney: V8.2 is a taste and quality update over V8.1, which brought native 2K and, per Midjourney, standard jobs about four to five times faster.
- Ideogram: 4.5 is built for editing. On text to image, Artificial Analysis currently scores it slightly below Ideogram 4.0 (Quality), so read 4.5 as an editing upgrade rather than a better generator.
10. Text rendering
- Midjourney: its V8 notes say text works better when placed in quotation marks. It is not its selling point.
- Ideogram: text has been its signature from the start, and the Ideogram 4 model card claims “best-in-class multilingual text rendering”. That is Ideogram’s claim; independent boards do not score text alone.
11. What users think (labelled user reports)
On X in October, people running image models locally praised Ideogram 4 with their own trained LoRAs, and one called it and Krea 2 the best local image models. Midjourney still appears in creator round-ups of standard image tools. These are individual posts, not a survey. We found little independent hands-on review of V8.2’s Edit Model yet.
12. General quality
Midjourney’s strength is a strong default look you can personalize, which makes it a favourite for art and mood work; with no public board entry, that is reputation rather than a score. Ideogram sits in the middle of the Artificial Analysis boards, well behind the leaders on single images, and makes its case on precise editing and text.
13. Licence and commercial use
- Midjourney: under its terms, you own what you create “to the fullest extent possible under applicable law”, but a company with more than $1 million a year in revenue must be on Pro or Mega to own its images. Midjourney gets a broad licence to your inputs and outputs, images are public and remixable by default unless you use Stealth mode on Pro or Mega, and the terms forbid automated tools for generating images.
- Ideogram: its pricing page says it does not claim ownership of generated images and you may use them commercially. The Ideogram 4 weights (9.3 billion parameters, NF4 and FP8, gated on Hugging Face) are free for research, testing and personal use only. Commercial self-hosting needs the self-serve licence from $300 a month billed yearly for 10,000 images a month; full precision and customer-facing products need Enterprise. Weights for 4.5 are not out.
14. Verdict (opinion)
Pick Midjourney if you are an artist or art director who works in an app, cares most about the look, and does not need automation; its terms rule out scripting it. Pick Ideogram if you are building something: per-image API prices, a dedicated editing endpoint, strong text, and weights you can run locally with a clear path to a commercial licence. Neither is the top scorer on public boards; if raw single-image quality per dollar is the goal, the leaders from episode 2 still win.
